The Stone for Peace Association of Hiroshima was established in 1991 for the purpose of rousing people to attention on peace by sharing the Stone for Peace that is a witness of the A-bomb blast in Hiroshima in 1945. The Stone for Peace is considered to be a symbol of desire for peace.

The Stone for Peace Association of Hiroshima is based in Hiroshima.Its Tokyo office liaises with embassies in Tokyo or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As the Stone for Peace activity gets along, a new project designed to help children receive basic education has been launched.

１.Background and Purpose of Establishment
	The Stone for Peace Association of Hiroshima was established in 1991 for the purpose of rousing people to attention on peace by sharing the Stone for Peace. The stones were paved stones under Hiroshima streetcars when the A-bomb blasted Hiroshima in August 1945. When it was proved that the stones have no radioactivity harmful to humans, some 10,000 citizens gathered and engraved an image of Goddess of Mercy in addition to the words “From Hiroshima” on the Stone praying for peace. As the carving work went along, people started to think donating those stones as a symbol of peace to countries around the world. They thought the possession of the stones would expand linkage across the world, demonstrating a determined desire for peace. Many people including high-profile figures agreed to this idea and in 1991 the Stone for Peace Association was established. The first Stone for Peace was donated that year to then President Alberto Fujimori of Peru, and since then the number of countries that have accepted the Stone has topped 100. This activity will keep sending out the voice of Hiroshima calling for world peace.

The Stone for Peace is now possessed by more than 100 countries, and the linkage among countries that wish to realize world peace is expanding through the Stone for Peace. Through this activity, we have learned that there are enormous numbers of children all over the world who cannot receive education because of poverty. The Peace Stone Foundation was established in 2000 to help those children receive literacy education with conviction that education is the necessity to pursue peace at a grass-root level.
